Illegal Firework Suppression Update

The Newark Police Department hears your concerns about illegal firework activity, and we are continuing to address the issue. Here is another update on our efforts:

Recently, while conducting illegal firework enforcement in the area of Graham Avenue and Olive Street, officers observed a group of individuals lighting mortar type aerial fireworks in the street. Officer Losier subsequently made contact and arrested a 37-year old male out of Newark. The subject was issued a citation for violating Health & Safety Code 12677 which may result in a fine of up to $1,000 and/or 6 months in jail. The fireworks were seized for destruction and the subject was released on his signed promise to appear in court.

We want to thank our community members that have called into the Fireworks Hotline and provided helpful information to our zero tolerance enforcement efforts.

As a reminder, ONLY "Safe & Sane" fireworks are allowed in Newark from midnight June 30 to midnight July 4.
"Dangerous" fireworks are ALWAYS illegal in Newark.

As clarification, “Dangerous” fireworks includes: sky rockets, bottle rockets, roman candles, aerial shells, firecrackers and other fireworks that explode, go into the air, or move on the ground in an uncontrollable manner.

It is illegal to sell, transport, or use fireworks that do not carry the “Safe and Sane” seal.

If you know someone or see someone who is in possession, selling and/or lighting fireworks, please call the Fireworks Hotline at (866)520-7233 (SAFE).
