Advisory

Harper Woods and Surrounding Area Flooding

As we are all aware, Southeast Michigan experienced heavy rainfall overnight, specifically areas along the I-94 corridor. Grosse Pointe reported rainfall totals of 6.5 + inches in some areas.

Grosse Pointes and Harper Woods pumping stations were overwhelmed by the amount of rain in a short amount of time.

In Harper Woods, I-94 was shut down and several motorists were forced to abandon their vehicles, several residents have reported basement flooding, City Hall experienced minor flooding in the lower level and non-emergency phones at the public safety department have been affected. However, 9-1-1 lines are functioning.

Water is receding across the area as pumping stations are reaching operational levels. All water which caused flooding in Harper Woods is storm water and not sewage.

To assist with pumping station efforts, Harper Woods Officials are requesting that residents conserve use of water with the use of appliances such as dishwashers and laundry washers. Unnecessary use of water could impede pumping efforts.

All area public safety departments are to be commended for their response overnight. Personnel responded to trapped motorists, fires caused by storms and other rainfall related issues. Please be patient with non-emergency response as personnel are still assisting with storm related response.

Harper Woods is recovering.

Unfortunately, more rain is on the way to metro Detroit.

The National Weather Service forecasts showers across metro Detroit until next Friday. Saturday thunderstorms may also create hail up to 1 inch in diameter. Wind gusts are expected to reach 60 mph, meaning an isolated tornado could be on the horizon.
