Topic: Stage 2 Fire Restrictions
 
Park County is now in Stage 2 Fire Restrictions. We are facing hot and dry conditions; fires actively burning in our region; and the increased number of visitors and risks associated with the Fourth of July holiday. 

Stage 2 Fire Restrictions prohibit the use of fire and high-risk activities including: campfires, fireworks, explosives, and other incendiary devices.  Off-road use of internal combustion engines, welding, or hot-work with torches are prohibited from 1:00 pm to 1:00 am.  This includes, but is not limited to, lawnmowers, chainsaws, and generators.  Operating motorized vehicles off designated roads and trails is prohibited at all times.  Smoking outdoors is prohibited unless in an area greater than 3 feet and clear of all flammable materials.  Exemptions allow for agricultural activities, community sponsored firework shows, and other essential activities.

We all have a personal responsibility for fire safety.  A person may be liable for starting a fire even if their activity is currently allowed.  The consequences of starting a fire that escapes your control can be devastating to life, property, and the environment.  You may be held legally and financially responsible for the costs of fighting a fire you start and the damage or injury it causes.  It is important to talk to children about fireworks safety and the risk of injury.  Let them know that their actions can put the family in legal and financial trouble. 

There is much to be grateful for this Fourth of July and we welcome family, friends, and visitors to celebrate with us.  You may still purchase fireworks, just save them until it is safe to use them.  Consider watching community fireworks in Livingston or Cooke City.
