Rusty Water Alert
Detroit found a six-inch water main break, but are still looking for additional issues with the system.
When rusty-brown, orange or light-yellow water is experienced, it is not normally a health concern but one of aesthetic quality. Operating valves, hydrant flushing, routine maintenance and construction work are some of the cause of discolored water.
Residents experiencing discoloration are advised not to use the water for laundry and other household uses that may result in staining fabrics until it turns clear. Boiling the water will not improve the discoloration. Residents should periodically check their water every one to two hours by running it for three minutes to see if it is clear. If it is clear, then they should flush each toilet at least once. All taps need to be open at once to ensure that all water in the pipes is replaced with clear water from the main. Once the water is clear, the water can be utilized as a resident normally would.
