As our Independence Day weekend festivities begin and we celebrate the actual vote to declare independence from Great Britain today, please do your part to ensure that our Town is able to enjoy a safe holiday weekend.

Here are some important safety tips:

• ALL FIREWORKS ARE PROHIBITED IN CONTRA COSTA COUNTY.  This includes "safe and sane" fireworks.  Remember, one of the sparklers that many of us used as kids generates high temperatures that will ignite dry grass or weeds.
• Use barbeque grills in well-ventilated areas on non-flammable surfaces.  Keep kids away from any hot surfaces - including the exterior of the barbeque.
• If you are sick, stay home and get better.  Consider social distancing and the use of a mask, depending upon your situation (i.e. crowds, indoor v. outdoor, etc.).
• While temperatures are forecast to be mild, it is still important to stay hydrated and use sunscreen.
• Fire danger is higher than normal, largely due to dry vegetation in the area.  If you see a vertical column of smoke or fire, call 9-1-1 and report it.
• Report any suspicious persons or activity to the Police.
• If you are going on vacation, please ensure that you secure and lock all of your doors and windows, set alarms, consider using the Moraga Police Department Vacation House Check service, and communicate with your neighbors so that you are all watching out for each other.
• Ensure that you are signed up with the Community Warning System (CWS) so that you can receive emergency notifications (www.cwsalerts.com).
