Suspect Arrested in Wine Bar Assault

Suspect Arrested in Wine Bar Assault

Suspect:  Alipate, Paula Iloahefaiu 57-year old male

On Saturday, June 20th, 2021, at approximately 12:15 AM, Redwood City Police Officers responded to the Wine Bar, located at 840 Brewster, on a report of an unconscious subject laying on the sidewalk in front of the business.  Officers arrived on scene, canvassed the scene for witnesses and video, and learned the victim, who appeared to be intoxicated, was asked to leave by Wine Bar security.  The victim refused to leave and had to be removed through the use of directed physical force, which included holding the victim down on the sidewalk in front of the Wine Bar until he calmed down.   Eventually, the victim was able to calm down, although momentarily, before attempting to enter the bar again.  The victim was refused entry again, and became involved in another assaultive altercation with security.  The victim was again forced down onto the sidewalk by security to control his aggressive behavior.  As the victim was laying on the sidewalk, the suspect (Paula Alipate), who was identified as security for the Wine Bar, kicked the victim in the head once and struck him in the face at least four times with a flashlight he was holding in his hand.  The victim was transported to Stanford Hospital for his injuries.
On Tuesday, June 22nd, at approximately 5:24 PM, Redwood City Detectives obtained an arrest warrant for the suspect and were conducting surveillance at the suspect’s residence when detectives observed him enter a vehicle as a passenger and drive away.  Detectives initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle in the area of 8th Avenue and Bay Road and were able to arrest the suspect without incident.  The suspect was booked into the San Mateo County Jail for assault with force likely to cause bodily injury.
During the course of the investigation, the victim died of a medical circumstance independent of the injuries sustained during the assault by Wine Bar security employee, Paula Alipate.  The San Mateo County Coroner’s Office conducted an autopsy and determined the victim’s injuries from the assault did not contribute to the victim’s cause of death.  This is an on-going investigation and anyone that may have additional information regarding this incident is encouraged to contact Redwood City Police Detective Andrew Sheffield at 650-780-5059 or the Redwood City Police Department’s Tip Line at 650-780-7110.

This information is approved for distribution by Investigations Division Commander, Lieutenant Casey Donovan, Redwood City Police Department.
