LITTERING SUSPECTS

On July 5, 2021, an observed holiday for Rutherford County employees, the Solid Waste Convenience Centers were closed.  During this time, many citizens and visitors left multiple bags of trash, furniture and other household items outside the locked gates.  Not only does this create an eye sore for the community, but animals rummage through the trash and leave an even bigger, preventable mess for the employees of the convenience centers.

As explained in G.S. 14-399, Under North Carolina's anti-littering law, individuals may be fined and face community service for intentionally and unintentionally littering. Intentional littering in the amount of 15 pounds or less is a Class 3 misdemeanor punishable by a fine of no less than $250, up to $1,000 and up to 24 hours of community service.  This also applies to items placed outside of, near, or thrown over the gates of the convenience centers outside of their operational hours.

In a joint effort between the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office and the Solid Waste Department, cameras had been placed at the Convenience Centers prior to the July 4’th holiday.  If you recognize any of the attached individuals, please contact Deputy McClung with the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office at 828-286-2911 or leave a message at 828-289-5157.
