On July 16, 2021, at 12:47AM, an officer with the Middleton Police Department observed a vehicle traveling southbound on Branch Street near Franklin Avenue.  The officer observed the vehicle cross over the bicycle lane with both passenger tires.  As the officer followed the suspect vehicle, the officer observed several lane deviations as it traveled.  After following the vehicle for a period of time, a traffic stop was initiated and the vehicle stopped. 

The driver was identified as Clayton R. Carlsen, age 68, of Madison.  The officer noted a strong odor of intoxicants coming from Carlsen’s breath and his speech was slurred.  Carlsen admitted to drinking intoxicating beverages. 

Following field sobriety testing, Carlsen was arrested for 5th offense operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated (OWI), a felony.  Carlsen provided an intoximeter breath sample with a result of .17.  Carlsen has a .02 restriction related to his previous OWI offenses.

Carlsen was booked into the Dane County Jail for the felony OWI.  He was also ticketed for deviating from his designated lane.
