Earlier this year we announced big news for the Capital Area Ingham County alert system! We now are able to provide you an improved app for receiving alerts. (If you are receiving this on the app already, you do not need to take any action are you are all set!) If you have been using the text message feature to get messages to your phone, you'll want to upgrade to the app as soon as possible. The biggest issue is timeliness - when mass texts go out, the rate they are pushed is restricted by the cellphone carriers. Using the app, there is no limit as this uses their backbone communications, so we can send tens of thousands at once. In addition, starting later this summer we are moving many of the traffic alerts to the app only. (Major incidents will still go out via text for phones that can't support the app.) This will allow you to better select which parts of the county you would like to be notified for regarding crashes and detours and the like, and allows us to provide graphics or maps for some of the incidents. The other advantage is that if you travel, the app will automatically connect you to other emergency alert systems in the country using Everbridge. If you are driving through a county that has sent an alert out, you will get it without having to have signed up for their service... And it's still free for you!
