El Cerrito Police Blotter: July 19th - 23rd, 2021

The following is a summary of criminal activity in El Cerrito. It does not include all crimes. It also does not include non-criminal events such as missing persons, traffic collisions, non-criminal deaths, non-criminal disputes, nor many other police activities that do not result in arrest.

July 13, 2021

Petty Theft- 100 block of Carmel Street
An unknown suspect entered the victim’s backyard sometime during the night of the 12th and stole a propane tank.

Outside Assist – 10900 San Pablo Ave.

At 4:05 pm, a Marin County resident received a call from an unknown person saying that his daughter had been kidnapped. The called demanded the victim drive to the bank, withdraw cash and wire the money to a location in Mexico. After completing the transfer, the victim was told that his daughter would be killed unless he drove to an additional bank.  As the victim entered El Cerrito his phone died, so he drove to the police station.  A detective was able to get a hold of the victim’s daughter and confirm the man was the victim of a phone scam.

July 15, 2021

Petty Theft- 3000 block of Yolo Avenue
An unknown suspect stole the license plates off a 2011 Kia between the 14th at 9:00 pm and the 15th at 11:00 am.

Restraining Order Violation- 7000 block of Moeser Lane
A known suspect violated a restraining order by contacting the victim via text messages.

July 16th

Arrest for Domestic Violence – Lawrence Ct. / Schmidt Ln:
At approximately 7:40am, a 48-year-old male after officers responded to the report of a domestic battery.  The male was booked at the El Cerrito Police Department and then transported to County Jail in Martinez.
 
July 17th

Child Abandonment & Neglect – Ross 11545 San Pablo Avenue
 
At 10:08 pm, El Cerrito police officers responded to the Ross store for a report of a found child.  A five-year-old girl was abandoned in the alley behind Ross.  Officer attempted to locate the victim’s mother however she could not be located.  Child Protective Services was notified and responded to take custody of the child.          
 
July 18th

Burglary – 700 block of Kearney Street:

At 7:18 pm, an officer was sent to a call where someone had pried open a sliding glass door at an apartment complex to get into a room with the mailboxes in it.  Once inside, the suspect apparently pried open all the mailboxes.  This was reported to have happened sometime during the day. 

Stolen license plates – 500 block of Kearney Street:

At 6:50 pm, an officer responded to the report of stolen license plates.   The suspect had replaced the victim’s stolen license plates with a license plate stolen in San Francisco. 

Attempt Grand Theft – 225 El Cerrito Plaza (Trader Joe’s):

At 9:10 pm, an officer was sent to the report that the victim had just walked to his car I the parking lot and there was someone under the car attempting to remove the catalytic converter.  When confronted by the victim, the suspect fled the area.

July 19th

Vandalism / Restraining order violation – 600 block of Norvell Street:

 At 2:20 am, officers were dispatched for the report of a subject breaking windows of a residence and trying to get inside.  Officers located the suspect inside the residence.  The suspect was barred from the property by a valid restraining order.  He had apparently kicked open a door to gain access inside the home.  After he was booked at ECPD, the subject was transported to the Martinez Detention Facility.
