El Cerrito Crime Blotter: July 19th - 26th, 2021

The following is a summary of criminal activity in El Cerrito. It does not include all crimes. It also does not include non-criminal events such as missing persons, traffic collisions, non-criminal deaths, non-criminal disputes, nor many other police activities that do not result in arrest.

July 19:

Stolen Vehicle – 5000 block of Victor Avenue
An unknown suspect stole a 2005 Ford Mustang sometime during the night of the 14th.

Vehicle Burglary – Kearney Street and Wall Avenue

An unknown suspect broke into the victim’s vehicle and stole property sometime during the night of the 18th.

Grand Theft – 3060 El Cerrito Plaza

At 9:08 am, an unknown suspect stole a laptop from the front passenger seat of a vehicle as the victim was preparing to leave. 

Petty Theft – 11760 San Pablo Avenue

(Delayed Reporting) An unknown suspect stole the license plates from the victim’s vehicle on the 27th of May.

Brandishing/Grand Theft – 900 block of Kearney Street

A 41 year-old transient was arrested after he put a knife to the victim’s neck during an argument. The victim was also strangled by the suspect. The suspect was booked at the ECPD and then transported to the Martinez Detention Facility.

Recovered Stolen Plates – Schmidt Lane and Norvell Court

At 2:47 am, an officer made a traffic stop and located a license plate attached to the rear of a vehicle which had previously been reported as stolen; the plate was removed from the vehicle.

Burglary- 5800 block of San Diego Street

An unknown suspect broke into a garage between 10:44 am to 11:26 am on the 19th and stole miscellaneous items.

July 20:

Stolen Vehicle – 100 block of Ashbury Avenue

An unknown suspect stole a 1996 Honda Civic sometime during the night of the 19th.

Trespassing, Assault, Resisting Arrest, AB109 Violation – 11450 San Pablo Avenue, Safeway

At 7:46 am, officers responded to call of a man hitting the glass windows of the business with a stick and cussing at employees. Upon arrival, officers learned that the man, a 41-year-old Richmond resident, had also kicked one of the security guards.  While being placed under arrest, the man resisted and refused to be handcuffed.  While struggling with the suspect, officers were able to remove several concealed knives from the suspect’s waistband.  Ultimately, the man was handcuffed and transported to Kaiser for a pre-existing medical condition.
   
Petty Theft – 1300 block of Contra Costa Drive

An officer reports an unknown suspect stole the victim’s license plates sometime during the past several weeks.

Robbery – 225 El Cerrito Plaza, Trader Joe’s

At 4:15 pm, an unknown suspect wrenched the victim’s phone from her hand and fled on a bicycle towards Albany.

Vandalism – 6400 block of Schmidt Lane

At 10:45 pm, an officer reports an unknown suspect pried open an apartment complex mailbox before being scared off by residents; it is unknown if anything was taken from inside the mailbox.

July 21:

Domestic Violence Protective Order – 1100 block of Lawrence Ct. 

At 8:30 am, an officer arrested a 48-year-old El Cerrito man for violating a restraining order. The man was booked at the ECPD and then transported to the Martinez Detention Facility.

Recovered Stolen Vehicle – 600 block of Kearney St. 

A Community Services Officer located a Ford F-150 that had been reported stolen to Concord PD on 7/18.

July 22:

Grand Theft- Terrace Dr/Seaview Ave.

At 9:54 am, officers responded to the report of several suspects stealing the catalytic converter from a Honda Civic.

Petty Theft- 900 bock of Kearney Street

A known suspect entered the tent of an unsheltered individual and stole over $800 of property on the 21st.

Indecent Exposure, Probation Violation- 2000 block of Key Boulevard

At 6:34 pm, an officer accepted the citizen’s arrest of a 52-year-old male after he exposed himself to the victim. The male, who is also on probation, was later transported to the Martinez Detention Facility.

Vandalism- 6009 Potrero Avenue, Hotel Mira Vista Berkley North

At 8:40 pm, an officer reports an unknown suspect threw rocks at the hotel on several prior occasions; during one instance a window was broken.

At 11:05 pm, an officer reports a female companion intentionally damaged the interior of the victim’s vehicle during an argument.

July 23:

Stolen Vehicle Recovery – 1600 block of Kearney St:

At 11:10 am, an officer recovered a vehicle which was reported stolen to the Berkeley Police Department early in the day.

Hit and Run – 10500 block of San Pablo Ave:

At 2:54 pm, an officer reports an unknown suspect collided into the victim’s vehicle and left the scene without providing their information.

July 24:

Stolen Vehicle – 800 block of Liberty St:

At 7:43 am, an officer reports an unknown suspect stole the victim’s vehicle sometime overnight. The vehicle would be recovered later in the day.

Strong Arm Robbery – 1600 block of S.56th St:

At 10:14 am, an officer reports while the victim was sitting in her vehicle, a suspect reached into her vehicle and grabbed her laptop.  Meanwhile another suspect stood watch.  A struggle ensued and the suspect was able to overpower the victim and yank the laptop away. The suspects then fled the area on foot.

Stolen Vehicle – 1800 block of Ganges Ave:

At 11:48 am, an officer reports an unknown suspect stole the victim’s vehicle sometime overnight.

Commercial Burglary – 6800 block of Stockton Ave:

At 2:47 pm, an officer reports an unknown suspect entered a building by forcing a door open. The suspect ransacked the interior but appeared not to have taken any property.

Criminal Threats – 900 block of Kearney St:

At 4:04 pm, an officer reports a known suspect returned to a homeless encampment and threatened bodily harm to the victim. The victim was able to find phone and call police. The suspect who is known fled the scene prior to police arrival.

July 25:

Grand Theft – 11565 San Pablo Ave (Walgreens):

At 2:52 pm, an officer reports a group of juveniles entered a business, loaded up large bags with merchandise, and then left without paying.

DUI and Hit and Run – 2100 block of Junction Ave:

At 5:29 pm, an officer reports the arrest of an 81-year-old male. The male struck a parked vehicle and then fled the scene without providing the necessary information. The driver was located in his vehicle nearby and was heavily intoxicated. The male was taken into custody, booked, and then released to a family member.

July 26:

Commercial Burglary – 10700 block of San Pablo Ave:

At 7:02 am, an officer reports an unknown suspect entered a business through the roof. Once inside the suspect rummaged through the business but did take any property.

Stolen Vehicle – 600 block of Liberty St:

At 10:38 pm, an officer reports an unknown suspect stole the victim’s vehicle sometime overnight.

Stolen Vehicle – 6700 block of Moeser Lane:

At 1:17 pm, an officer reports an unknown suspect stole the victim’s vehicle sometime between 7/25/21 to 7/26/21.

Commercial Burglary – 10500 block of San Pablo Ave:

At 2:08 pm, an officer reports an unknown suspect entered a business through the roof and once inside stole cash.
