Las Cruces police arrested the man believed to be responsible for Saturday’s fatal shooting on Brownlee Avenue.

Suspect Charged with Murder in Weekend Shooting

Las Cruces police arrested the man believed to be responsible for Saturday’s fatal shooting on Brownlee Avenue.

Doroteo N. “Dayle” Vasquez, 28, of the 900 block of Parker Road, is charged with an open count of murder and a fourth-degree felony count of shooting at or from a motor vehicle.

Shortly before 5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 14, Las Cruces police and fire were dispatched to the report of a gunshot victim near a home on the 1200 block of Brownlee Avenue. Officers arrived to find 33-year-old Brandon David King on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds. King was transported to Mountainview Regional Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries.

Investigators learned Vasquez and King knew each other and both had dated the same woman. On Saturday, Vasquez arrived at the residence where the woman was temporarily staying and saw King at a nearby home. Investigators learned that, as Vasquez and the woman were leaving the residence, words were exchanged between Vasquez and King.

Vasquez and the woman claim King struck Vasquez with some type of object prompting Vasquez to retrieve a firearm from the woman’s car. Vasquez allegedly fired rounds at King, striking him and forcing King to buckle-over. Investigators learned Vasquez then fired additional rounds at King.

Investigators learned Vasquez and the woman got into her vehicle and, as she backed her car out of the driveway, Vasquez fired additional rounds at King.

Sometime after the shooting, Las Cruces police and Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office deputies located the woman’s car near Vasquez’s home. Vasquez and the woman were both taken into custody for investigative purposes. Investigators obtained a warrant to search the vehicle where they located a firearm that matched what witnesses described was used during the shooting.

Vasquez was arrested and booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center where he is initially being held without bond.
