The Moraga Police Department is mourning the loss of Corporal Kevin Mooney, who passed away on August 21, 2021

The Moraga Police Department is mourning the loss of Corporal Kevin Mooney, who passed away on August 21, 2021 following a brave battle with COVID-19 and related complications.  Kevin was 58 years old.

Kevin joined the Moraga Police Department in 2013.  At the time of his death, he was assigned as the Department’s Detective and had excelled in this position.  He had earned a reputation as an fierce advocate for victims and a relentless pursuer of criminals.  Kevin also served as a rangemaster, a field training officer and as the President of the Moraga Police Officers Association.  He began the Department’s holiday season toy drive, which collected hundreds of toys and thousands of dollars over the past few years for the Marine Corps Toys for Tots program, ensuring that many children had a Merry Christmas.

Prior to joining the Moraga Police, Kevin served as a Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Deputy for 21 years, where he worked custody, county patrol and patrolled the City of Orinda for many years.  Kevin also proudly served as a member of the United States Marine Corps for 29 years, during which he served overseas and saw combat in Iraq.  Kevin retired in 2010 at the rank of Major.

Kevin was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend to many.  Our hearts and prayers are with his wife, children and grandchildren.

Kevin’s death is an incredible loss and he will be missed by his family, his Moraga Police family and our entire community.  Funeral services are pending.
