Potential For Severe Weather Today, and Through The Weekend

An active weather pattern is expected to continue with several rounds of storms are expected to move across the region through the weekend.  Strong to severe storms with damaging winds, large hail, an isolated tornado could develope.   Torrential rains are possible and could lead to significant rainfall, urban flooding and flash flooding. 

There remains a large degree of uncertainty on the exact track and timing of these storms, with each round of storms influencing the location and timing of the next round.

Be sure to stay weather aware through the weekend and have multiple ways to receive updated weather information. Remember, if flooding occurs, never attempt to drive through flood waters. Take the time to find an alternate route.

Planning information:

  • What: Severe storms with damaging winds and torrential rains.  Large hail and an isolated tornado are possible too.
  • Where: Southeast MN, northeast IA, and southwest WI.
  • Timing: One area of storms over northeast Nebraska may push into parts of Iowa and MN and weaken.  A second area of storms in the Dakotas are forecast to develop into a line across MN and push southeast this afternoon and tonight.   Additional storms are possible in their wake.
  • Impacts: Winds could damage trees, down power lines,  Torrential rains could lead to urban and flash flooding, hail damage to property, crops possible.
  • ACTION: stay weather aware! Take shelter when storms approach. Do not drive through flooded roadways. Make sure your emergency kit is accessible, with fresh batteries in your electronic devices.
