Crime Bulletin for the Week of August 16-22, 2021

When I mention “the unit block” of a street, this means the incident occurred at an address anywhere between 1 and 99 of the street.

Notable Cases

On Tuesday, 08-17-21 at 3:10 p.m., subsequent to a traffic stop by Officer Fulmore, a 27-year old Daly City resident was arrested for being a felon in possession of a firearm, possession of a concealed firearm within a vehicle, being a prohibited person in possession of ammunition, driving on a suspended driver's license, and possession of marijuana in an open container. This occurred on Southgate Avenue and Palmdale Avenue.

On Wednesday, 08-18-21 at 1:24 p.m., a 57-year old San Francisco resident was the victim of a robbery by an unknown suspect. This occurred in the parking lot of the Chase Bank on Junipero Serra Boulevard. The victim said he went to the bank to get a cashier’s check to pay his rent. The victim parked his vehicle in the parking lot and went inside the bank. The victim received the cashier’s check in an envelope, carried the envelope to his car and put the envelope in the glove compartment. The victim said as soon as he tried to start his vehicle, he said an unknown suspect approached his driver’s side window and shattered it with a black semi-automatic handgun. The victim said then the suspect pointed the firearm at him and demanded the money and envelope. The victim said he reached across to access his glove box and handed over the envelope. The victim said the suspect then began to “pat search” his chest and front pants pocket, looking for more items to steal. The victim said he reached into his pocket and gave the suspect $400. The victim said the suspect then fled from the parking lot, but he did not know which direction. The victim described the suspect as a black male, early 20’s, approximately 5’6” to 5’8”, 150-160 lbs., wearing a black hoodie with the hood pulled over his head.

On Friday, 08-20-21at 8:34 a.m., a 47 and 50 year old Daly City resident were the victims of an assault with a deadly weapon by a 42-year old transient subject who swung an approximate three foot metal pipe at them and threatened them. This occurred in the parking lot of the United Methodist Church on Southgate Avenue. The suspect hit a nearby Ford Transit van with the pipe and caused a dent to the van. The subject’s probation officer was contacted, and the subject was arrested and taken to jail. The victims were physically unharmed.

On Saturday, 08-21-21 at approximately 1:50 p.m., a 22-year old Tracy resident was the victim of an attempted murder by her ex-boyfriend, a 23-year old Bakersfield resident, after he stabbed her upper body 15 times with a kitchen knife. The ex-boyfriend then used the same knife to lacerate his own throat in an ostensible suicide threat. This occurred inside a residence on the 400 block of Vista Grande Avenue. Both the victim and suspect were treated by emergency personnel and transported to the hospital. After he was medically cleared, the suspect was booked for attempted murder and for violating a court order.

On Saturday, 08-21-21 at approximately 2:55 p.m., officers were advised of a medical call involving two people who were in full cardiac arrest at the Gellert Park Clubhouse. Three subjects (ranging from 47 to 54 years old) most likely overdosed on Fentanyl and were transported to two different hospitals.

On Saturday, 08-21-21 at 8:26 p.m., Officer L. Reyes was dispatched to the 200 block of Southgate Avenue on a report of a brandishing. Officer Greene and Sergeant Aquila found the suspect matching the description on Southgate Avenue and Elmwood Drive. The victim, a 37-year old Daly City resident, said his girlfriend worked at a nearby business, and his girlfriend had been having problems with a customer who “comes to her job and harasses her”. The victim’s girlfriend told him that the subject was at the business and had grabbed her buttocks. The victim arrived at the store and stood around and did not approach the suspect. The victim said the suspect then approached the victim and pulled out a knife, took a fighting stance and threatened to “gut” him. The victim pulled out pepper spray from his pocket and sprayed the suspect in the face. Officer L. Reyes later arrested the suspect, a 47-year old Daly City resident, for brandishing and criminal threats.

Scams/Other

“Zelle” Transactions Scam

On Sunday, 08-15-21 at 12:54 p.m., a 41-year old Daly City resident lost almost $4,000 after she was the victim of a money transfer scam. The victim said she received a message on her phone that stated “Did you authorize $5,000 on Zelle. Call back.” The victim said since she had “Googled” the telephone number, and it came back to Chase Bank customer service, so she thought the person she was speaking with was legitimate. The victim called the number and spoke with “Charles Levi”, who claimed to be an employee from Chase Bank. Levi told the victim to log into her Zelle application and make changes to the settings. Levi instructed the victim to send some “test transactions”, which would all be refunded after they were sent. The victim sent four transactions totaling $3,942.85 and later realized she was scammed when she spoke to an actual Chase customer service member who told her the transactions were sent to a Zelle account with the name of “Tyrell Williams” in Atlanta. In this case, there were two telephone numbers, and the first number did come back to Chase Bank. The second number was a “Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP)” number with no subscriber information. Scammers typically can use cellphone applications that allow them to appear as though they are calling from legitimate phone numbers, also known as “Spoofing”. Scammers use multiple disposable VOIP numbers which mask their identities and make it extremely difficult to track them down.

Nextdoor.com

Nextdoor.com is a free private social networking website for your neighborhood. This private network ensures that only those who live in your neighborhood can join; users must go through a verification process. Neighbors ask each other for business recommendations; help in locating missing pets; discuss relevant local government issues; or connect for other reasons. It is very easy to sign up. I like the fact that the site verifies users by addresses, and it won’t allow people to access to a neighborhood if they don’t live there. Please note: The City of Daly City and/or the Police Department cannot see what residents post—we are only allowed to post information. There is also a mobile application, or you can have it sent to your e-mail. Give it a try!  www.nextdoor.com
