Narrative:
The 2021-2022 school year has begun at all Camarillo campuses, and all schools now have students attending on a daily basis in person. The Camarillo Police Department would like to remind motorists to be extra cautious as they travel near schools. As children and parents make their way to and from school, there will be a significant increase in both vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
 
The City of Camarillo employs crossing guards to facilitate the safe passage of students and parents at intersections near our schools throughout the City. These dedicated individuals’ number one priority is the safe passage of students and we ask that motorists make children’s safety their priority as well. Obey all traffic laws, remain observant near schools and always wait for the crossing guard to return to the sidewalk before you proceed through the crosswalk.
 
The City of Camarillo has current openings and is actively hiring school crossing guards. This rewarding position is a seasonal part-time employment through the City of Camarillo. Devoted and enthusiastic citizens who would like to help our local students safely travel to school are encouraged to apply. To ensure children and crossing guards are able to maintain a safe surrounding, the Camarillo Police Department has the following important reminders and procedures for motorists and students:
 
Motorists:
  • SLOW DOWN! Observe the posted speed limit and traffic laws in school zones at all times. Camarillo Police Deputies will be assigned to these areas to enforce traffic laws.
  • Pay attention to Crossing Guards.  Do not enter the intersection until all pedestrians are clear, the Crossing Guard has reached the curb and lowered the hand held “STOP” Sign. Do not ever enter a cross walk or intersection while the Crossing Guard is present and displays the STOP sign.
  • Stay off of your cell phone or any other activities that may distract you as you travel.
  • Be very careful when driving on neighborhood streets and around school zones.  Always expect the unexpected. 
  • If you are dropping your child off at school, do not stop in the street and let them out.  Pull safely to the curb, without blocking driveways, and let them out in an approved safe area.
 
Students:
  • Only cross the street at a marked crosswalk or at the corners of intersections. All corners are considered by law to be crosswalks, whether marked or not.
  • Be kind and courteous to the Crossing Guards, follow all commands given and only cross streets when instructed to do so.
  • Look left, look right and then left again before crossing and continue to be aware of your surroundings.
  • Stay alert!  Put cell phones, games, and other devices away until you arrive at your school.  If you wear earbuds, use them in one ear only, so that the other ear can hear sounds and possible hazards.
  • Always make eye contact with drivers prior to crossing when vehicles are approaching or stopped.
