Advisory

1 Injured in Crash

Sheriff Richard J Behnke of the Cass County Sheriff's Office reports, on 9/5/21 at 1430 hours, his office responded to a personal injury crash that occurred in the 500 block of Snyder St, in the Village of Marcellus, Cass County, Michigan.

Deputies were called to Three Rivers Hospital for an injured 3-year-old who was the passenger of a dirt bike that had been involved in a private property crash. The driver of the dirt bike, 49-year-old Jerry Swartz of Marcellus, advised while riding around, the dirt bike’s throttle cable had broken causing a loss of control.  The bike was unable to slow or stop and heading for a tree. Jerry thought it would be safer to lay the bike down than hit the tree. While doing so, Jerry grabbed the 3-year-old, Corbin Allen Spangler, and tried to absorb most of the impact himself, to protect the child.

Family members transported the child to Three Rivers Hospital and was later transported by Aircare to Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo for treatment.

Alcohol was not a factor in this crash. Helmets were worn. This case remains under investigation at this time.

Assisting in the case was Aircare.
