Gilroy Police Investigating an Officer Involved Shooting

On September 8, 2021 at approximately 2:30 A.M. Gilroy Police Officers responded to a business, located on the 100 block of Fourth Street for a report of an intoxicated male.  When the first officer arrived on scene, a Hispanic Adult Male was encountered, and within seconds shot at the officer with a handgun.  The officer returned fire, and the male sustained at least one gunshot wound during the exchange.  Emergency medical aid was provided at the scene, and the male was transported to a local trauma center where he succumbed to his injuries.  The male’s identity is being withheld pending notification of the next-of-kin.  The police officers on scene were not struck by the gunfire during this incident.
 
This incident is being investigated by the Gilroy Police Department’s Investigations Bureau and Internal Affairs.  An independent and concurrent investigation is also being conducted by the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office.  The investigation continues to develop.  For this reason, only preliminary information is being released at this time. Additional information may be released as it becomes available.
 
This critical incident initiated a request for assistance.  The Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office and the California Highway Patrol responded to the scene.
