Of the 6 guns that were seized, 4 were found in vehicles that were searched in relation to incidents. Drugs were also found in the vehicles all 4 of these incidents, and in one case, a black ski mask. The other two guns seized were reported to be in possession of a felon, and were removed from the felon’s home.
According to the FBI, during the six-year period from 2012 to 2017, more than $829 million worth of guns were reported stolen from individuals nationwide, amounting to an estimated 1.8 million guns. Stolen guns pose a threat to all as they end up in the hands of criminals and are often used in crimes. The Janesville Police Department had 31 guns reported as stolen from vehicles in the last year and half alone.
Although JPD works hard to try and prevent thefts from motor vehicles, there are many ways citizens can help. Theft from motor vehicles is often a crime of opportunity. Citizens should never leave anything of value in their vehicles and should always lock their vehicle's doors.
If you are a victim of this type of crime we request that you report it. Any information reported is valuable and allows us to better track and potentially return stolen weapons. It is recommended that you keep a list of serial numbers for your weapons in a safe place, and always keep your weapons secured in a gun safe.

During the month of August, the Janesville Police Department received 3 reports of stolen guns and seized 6 guns while investigating incidents. Of the stolen guns, two were taken from vehicles assumed to be unlocked. The other gun was stolen from a residence while it was out in the open.
