Advisory
Important message from Burr Ridge Mayor Grasso on Covid-19 - 09/15/2021.
COVID-19, now predominantly called the “Delta Variant”, remains part of our everyday. Similarly, the DuPage County Board of Health continues to hold periodic conference calls with county mayors. I could not attend the Monday call, but received a summary and report the pertinent information here for you along with additional information. If you want more information go to DCHD COVID-19 Dashboard. While I know this information is DuPage centered, our Cook residents should take note of it as applying to our overall community – COVID has no geographic borders.
The Community Transmission rate remains “High” because Delta appears to be more contagious. The good news is the number of new cases per day in DuPage has decreased from 200 to the 160s in the last few weeks. Positivity is currently 4.4%-lower than the state rate which remains around 5%. Hospitalizations in our area are decreasing with reduced ICU and non-ICU COVID admissions here. Bed availability in our Region 8 is improving. Deaths have also decreased – but people are still dying! Note the data from downstate Illinois is trending in the opposite direction – they are out of ICU in some areas. The largest new case ages are persons under age 29; these too are trending down here, but apparently not so downstate. The weather remains excellent for outdoor activity, but we all know too well that likely will not hold for long. Once we are more inside than outside, cases may well increase again.
DCHD advised the mayors that the CDC reports unvaccinated people are ten times more likely to die from COVID than those who are fully vaccinated. Since vaccinations became available, fully vaccinated DuPage residents accounted for 3.9% of COVID patients, 0.13% of hospitalizations, and 0.03% of deaths. Vaccinated patients also tend to have less severe outcomes if infected with COVID. Of the DuPage population over 12, 70.1% were reported fully vaccinated, and of the total state population, 60.1% are fully vaccinated. DuPage County continues to lead the state in vaccination rate. Approximately 200,000 County residents over age 12 are unvaccinated. Those seeking information about vaccine booster shots should consult their doctors. Booster vaccinations are anticipated to begin September 20 pending FDA/CDC approval and additional information on who and when they will receive shots. Clinical trials are underway for pediatric populations with vaccination availability later into the fall. As a state, we remain under Governor Pritzker’s Executive Order 2021-20 addressing face coverings and vaccinations/testing for health care workers and school personnel.
We are 18 months into this battle. Stay vigilant. The recommendation is to wear masks inside when gathering with larger groups. Remember, vaccinated persons can still get – and spread – COVID. Stay healthy. Next week is officially fall – but it’s already in the air. Enjoy the wonderful weather, the return to outdoor sports (football!) and music events, and hopefully some semblance of normalcy. See you on October 9 for the Taste of Burr Ridge!
