Arrest for Multiple Burglaries
On Wednesday, September 15, 2021 at approximately 11:50 PM, the Middleton Police Department took a report of an attempted burglary to a business on University Avenue. A suspect was seen on video attempting entry to a locked back door. Officers checked the area and could not find him. Several hours later, at around 1:30 AM, officers were sent to an alarm at Dunn’s Auto at 6516 University Avenue. Responding officers discovered that the business had been burglarized and property was missing. Later that same morning, a burglary was reported at the Wolf Kubly Ace Hardware store at 6305 University Avenue. Video surveillance showed a male matching the description from the first attempted burglary that night loading stolen merchandise into a vehicle.
Video surveillance images were quickly shared with area law enforcement and within minutes, detectives and officers from area agencies positively identified the suspect as Menes A. Weightman, 43, of Dallas, Texas. Later that morning, the Madison Police Department advised that they had arrested Weightman in the 2500 block of McDivitt Road for an arrest warrant out of Texas and multiple pending charges related to a series of crimes in the Dane County area. Weightman was also found in possession of stolen property from the two Middleton burglaries from earlier that day.
Due to strong partnerships with area agencies and rapid information sharing, within hours of the crimes, Weightman was booked into the Dane County Jail for multiple charges from our agency, including one count of attempted burglary and two counts of burglary. He is facing criminal charges from other Dane County law enforcement agencies as well.
