Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau detectives are continuing to assist Signal Hill Police Department personnel investigate the circumstances surrounding an Officer-Involved shooting that occurred on Monday, September 20, 2021 on the 1000 block of Willow Street, Signal Hill.
Detectives have learned that at approximately 12:56 P.M., officers from Signal Hill Police Department responded to a report of a stabbing at a popular grocery store located on the 1600 block of east Willow Street in Signal Hill.
As officers responded, they received information that the suspect was fleeing from the location on foot, westbound on Willow Street.
During the police response, an officer located an individual walking westbound on the north curb of Willow Street, matching the description of the suspect from the earlier stabbing.
As the officer attempted to detain the suspect, the suspect ignored his commands and continued to flee.
The officer then exited his vehicle, again attempting to detain the suspect.
The suspect produced a large knife and attacked the officer, at which time an officer-involved shooting occurred.
The suspect, a male Hispanic adult, was struck at least one time in the upper torso. He was transported to a local hospital and pronounced dead.
The officer was not injured.
A large knife was recovered at the scene.
The stabbing victim at the grocery store, a male Black adult, suffered a stab wound to his upper torso and was transported to local hospital. The victim remains in fair condition.
The relationship between the suspect and stabbing victim, if any, is unknown.
The incident does not appear to be gang related.
