UPDATE: OPD’s Negotiators communicated with the armed suspect and were able to have the individual peacefully surrender. The suspect is in custody, and the knife was recovered.
Background:
The Oakland Police Department (OPD) is currently working two crime scenes:
The first is a barricaded suspect in the 2100 block of Martin Luther King Jr Way. The suspect is armed with a knife.
OPD’s Patrol, Tactical Unit, along with Negotiators and the Mental Health Team are all on scene communicating with the suspect who is still armed with the knife. The individual has minor self-inflicted wounds from the knife, our focus and intention are a peaceful surrender and solution.
Earlier the same suspect shot an OPD officer at 21st Street and Telegraph Avenue. A firearm has been recovered from that scene. The officer is listed in stable condition at an area hospital.
