The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch from 4 p.m. this afternoon through Friday morning.
The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch from 4 p.m. this afternoon through Friday morning. A flash flood watch indicates that conditions are favorable for flash flooding and that it is a possibility. We ask everyone to remain indoors when possible and use extreme caution, especially during the storm's peak intensity.
In the event of life-threatening emergencies, dial 911.
To report downed wires, road blockages, and non-life-threatening issues, contact (914) 238-4422. Treat all downed wires as if they are live. Be mindful that downed wires can be hidden from view by tree limbs, leaves, etc.
Please do not call the Police if you lose power. Calling the Police to report a power loss only serves to tie up emergency telephone lines. You will be referred to contact Con Edison directly at 1-800-75-CONED. Calling Con Edison enters your power loss into their computerized database. You can also report outages, view the outages map, and check outage status at www.conEd.com.
Con Edison would also like us to encourage their customers to sign up for text alerts. You can use your cell phone to text REG to OUTAGE (688243) and follow the prompts. You'll need your account number and to confirm your zip code. To retrieve your account number, log in to My Account or check your bill. This information is also located on their website at www.coned.com/text.
We recommend all residents and business owners remove or properly secure any outdoor items that can exacerbate hazardous conditions during strong winds and flash flooding. Please take steps to protect your property and belongings, such as bringing outdoor furniture inside and moving indoor items to the highest level within your home, which may be a second floor or attic. You can also consider using sandbags as a barrier to redirect small amounts of water (up to two feet) and debris from flooding away from your house or other structures.
If you're in the car and a flash flood is imminent or occurring, try to stay calm and remember these tips:
- Don't drive around barricades: If you come across a barrier blocking a flooded road, do not drive around it. Instead, back up and find an alternate route.
- Avoid driving on bridges over fast-moving water: Floodwater can wash out a bridge with little or no warning. If water is moving quickly under a bridge, avoid driving over the bridge.
- Avoid driving through floodwater: Driving through floodwater is dangerous, as it only takes 12 inches of water for a small sedan or SUV to float, says the NWS. You should also avoid driving through large puddles. They may look shallower than they are and can disguise hazards such as a washed-out road or sharp debris.
- Stay in your vehicle if you're surrounded by fast-moving water: Unless water is rising inside your vehicle, do not exit the vehicle when you're surrounded by quickly-moving floodwater. If water is rising inside your vehicle, exit the car and get onto the roof.
If you're ever in doubt about you or your family's safety during a flood, remember to turn around, don't drown, says the NWS.
