LASD Homicide Detectives investigating deputy involved shooting in Lancaster

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau detectives are continuing their investigation into a deputy-involved shooting of a male Black adult that occurred on Wednesday, September 22, 2021.
Detectives have learned, at approximately 9:32 P.M., deputies from the Lancaster Sheriff’s Station responded to the 500 block of W. Ave. J-12 in the city of Lancaster, regarding a known Criminal Threats suspect, seated in a vehicle in front of the victim’s location.

When deputies attempted to contact the suspect, they observed him holding a rifle. The suspect became uncooperative and barricaded himself inside of the vehicle. The deputies attempted to negotiate the suspect’s surrender for approximately an hour and a half. During the negotiation, the suspect pointed the rifle at deputies and a deputy-involved shooting occurred.

The suspect was treated at the scene and transported to a local area hospital where he was listed in critical condition.

No deputies were injured and a rifle was recovered at the scene.

Whenever a deputy-involved shooting occurs involving Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies, and a person is struck by gunfire, multiple independent investigations immediately begin at the scene.  These include separate investigations by the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau and Internal Affairs Bureau.  The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department immediately notifies the Office of the Inspector General who sends a representative to the incident scene and provides independent oversight throughout the investigative process.  Once concluded, a preliminary review is conducted by the Critical Incident Review Panel to determine whether any immediate actions are warranted.  Every aspect of the shooting is reviewed by the Sheriff's Executive Force Review Committee.  Input from Constitutional Policing Advisors is provided during the process.  The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, Justice System Integrity Division, conducts a legal analysis to determine whether any criminal charges will be filed and if the shooting was legally justified.
