Catalytic Converter Theft is on the Rise
What is a Catalytic Converter?
Part of a vehicle’s exhaust system that reduces harmful emissions.
Why Are Catalytic Converters Being Stolen from Vehicles?
Many countries have enacted stricter emission standards, so the demand for catalytic converters and their metals has increased.
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, high unemployment rates have left people struggling to make ends meet. In addition, the mining of precious metals has decreased. As a result, prices for those metals (e.g. platinum, palladium, rhodium, etc.) have risen. People who steal catalytic converters sell the precious metals.
Why is it Difficult to Identify and Prosecute Catalytic Converter Thieves?
Thieves can steal a catalytic converter quickly - within minutes. The parts do not have identifying numbers making identification difficult.
Are Certain Vehicles More Prone to Catalytic Converter Theft?
Although any car can be the subject of cat theft, certain types of vehicles are targeted more often than others. Owners of the following models should be extra cautious: Toyota Prius, Honda Accord, Trucks and SUV’s.
Should You Be Worried About Catalytic Converter Theft?
Yes. Having your car’s catalytic converter stolen can be a significant financial burden to replace (approximately $3,000 - $5,000), is inconvenient and can result in increased insurance costs.
How to Tell if Your Catalytic Converter has Been Stolen
If your catalytic converter gets stolen, you will know right away. With the piece of the exhaust system missing, the car is really, really loud.
What Can You Do to Prevent Being a Victim of Catalytic Converter Theft?
* Etch your catalytic converter with your vehicle identification number or license plate number
* Build or purchase a product to protect your catalytic converter
* Park in a secure parking spot (e.g. garage, gated community, etc.), or areas that are well-lit with regular passing traffic
* Reach out to your neighbors and work together to monitor each other’s property. Encourage one another to report suspicious behavior or a crime in progress by calling 9-1-1
* If you have been a victim of a prior theft with no known suspect(s), create an online police report at www.scpd.org
