Crime Alert Bulletin for the week of September 13-19, 2021

When I mention “the unit block” of a street, this means the incident occurred at an address anywhere between 1 and 99 of the street.

Notable Cases

On Wednesday, 09-15-21 at 12:30 a.m., officers were dispatched to the first floor of the parking garage at 1851 Junipero Serra Boulevard on a report of a just-occurred armed robbery and carjacking. The reporting party (victim), a 32-year old San Leandro resident, said he and his friend (a 30-year old San Francisco resident) were walking back to the parking lot after watching a movie. The victim said as they were approaching his vehicle, he saw a dark skinned black male in his 20-30’s, approximately 5’9”, stocky build, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, black hat, dark pants, and carrying a black backpack come up to his friend and pulled out a black handgun. The subject demanded the victim’s friend to give him his personal belongings, and once the subject received the belongings, he aimed the gun at the victim’s direction and demanded his belongings—including the car keys. The suspect told both of the victims to lay face down on the ground. The subject then took off with the vehicle. This investigation is continuing.

On Wednesday, 09-15-21 at approximately 7:15 p.m., four subjects entered the Infinity Jewelers store at Serramonte Shopping Center and used wrenches and hammers to shatter the glass display stands and stole approximately $120,000 worth of jewelry. The subjects fled in a white Lexus, and a pursuit was initiated and ended in South San Francisco after one of the subjects crashed and disabled the vehicle. Four subjects, all East Palo residents ranging from 16 to 19 years old, were arrested for robbery, felonious vandalism, and criminal conspiracy.

On Thursday, 09-16-21 at 10:04 p.m., Officer N. Martin was on a traffic stop in front of Jefferson High School when he heard a loud metallic “bang” noise. Officer Martin turned to see where the noise was coming from and saw a subject wearing a backpack, black jacket, red hoodie with the hood up, facemask, and gloves leaving the closed school and slamming the gate as he left. Thinking the subject may have been trespassing at the school, Officer Martin attempted to contact the subject; however, the subject ignored the officer and boarded a Sam Trans bus. The subject got off the bus at the Daly City BART station where Officer Martin contacted him again. The officer later found out the reason why the subject was evasive was that he was carrying a concealed firearm on his person. The subject, a 45-year old San Francisco resident, was subsequently arrested for that charge as well as carrying a loaded firearm in a public place, bringing ammunition into a school, possessing a firearm in a school, resisting an executive officer, and falsely identifying himself to a police officer.

On Friday, 09-17-21 at 10:08 p.m., Officer Greene was on a call for service in the area of the Westlake Shopping Center and heard what sounded like a piece of a vehicle scraping on the roadway. The officer saw a Camry go through a red light on John Daly Boulevard and lost sight of the vehicle. Officer Greene got back into his patrol car, and as he arrived at the intersection of John Daly Boulevard and Highway 35, he saw the Camry had collided into a tree. Officer Greene attempted to contact the driver who was not wearing a seatbelt and was unconscious. The driver was the only one in the vehicle, and the airbags had deployed. Officer Greene and Officer Arguelles removed the driver from the vehicle. The driver regained consciousness, was bleeding from his mouth, and also had a fracture to his right arm. The driver, a 30-year old Millbrae resident, had an odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from his breath, and his speech was slurred. The paramedics transported the driver to the hospital for surgery due to internal abdominal bleeding. This report will be forwarded to the District Attorney's Office.

Scams/Other

On Wednesday, 09-15-21, a 72-year old Daly City resident received a phone number based out of New Jersey. When she answered the phone, she believed she was talking to her son who told her he was in a two car collision that caused him to fracture his nose and receive four stitches on his lip. The “son” told her not to tell anyone and to call his public defender. After she hung up the phone the “Public Defender” called stating that she needed to send a cash bond to bail her son out of jail. The caller told her she needed $7,800 in cash and to send them via Fed Ex in two separate envelopes. The victim followed the directions given by the “Public Defender” and sent the cash overnight to an address in New Jersey. The victim later searched the address and learned it was not a jail facility but rather a residence. The victim said her son did not live in New Jersey and did not call him because she thought he was in jail. The victim later learned she was scammed.

Nextdoor.com

Nextdoor.com is a free private social networking website for your neighborhood. This private network ensures that only those who live in your neighborhood can join; users must go through a verification process. Neighbors ask each other for business recommendations; help in locating missing pets; discuss relevant local government issues; or connect for other reasons. It is very easy to sign up. I like the fact that the site verifies users by addresses, and it won’t allow people to access to a neighborhood if they don’t live there. Please note: The City of Daly City and/or the Police Department cannot see what residents post—we are only allowed to post information. There is also a mobile application, or you can have it sent to your e-mail. Give it a try!  www.nextdoor.com
