Sheriff Richard J. Behnke reports that on 09/27/2021 at approximately 1115 hrs. his office was called along with the fire department to investigate a house fire in the 24,000 block of Meade Street, Wayne Township, Cass County, Michigan.  During the fire suppression operations, 65 yr. old Dowagiac resident, Robert Hilliard, was located inside the residence, deceased.  This case remains under investigation.

Assisting the Sheriff’s office were Wayne Township Fire Department, City of Dowagiac Fire Department, Decatur Fire Department, Pride Care Ambulance Service, and the Michigan State Police Fire Investigation Unit.
