Volunteers Wanted for Invasive Plant Removal

Volunteers are sought to assist the Byram Township Environmental Commission with the identification and removal of invasive plants on Saturday, October 2nd, from 9 a.m. to noon, along the Glenside Woods Trail.  Participants will park and meet on Camelot Drive, across from the trail entrance on Lee Hill Road.  Michael Van Clef, Director of NJ Invasive Species Strike Force, will instruct volunteers on how to identify specific invasive plants.  This brief lesson will be followed by a walk on Glenside Woods Trail and the removal of the invasives.

Invasive plants are not native to the area and take up large amounts of space that would otherwise be occupied by various native species. Unchecked, invasive plants choke out native plants, adversely impacting animals and insects.

Volunteers will be given bottled water, work gloves, and bags in which to collect invasive plants. Volunteers are reminded to bring bug and tick repellant, sunscreen and hand tools.

The Environmental Commission is a very active group and is comprised of environmentally minded volunteers.  We currently have a vacancy and would welcome new members!

To register (for the event or to join the Environmental Commission), please contact the Byram Township Environmental Commission Secretary Donna Fett at 973-347-2500, ext. 138, or [email protected].
