SMPD Arrests Driver After Fatal DUI Collison
San Mateo, CA – On Sunday, September 26, 2021, at approximately 5:02 p.m., San Mateo Police Department arrested a 24-year old female for driving under the influence after a three car collision occurred near the intersection of E. Santa Inez Avenue and N. Humboldt Street. A passenger in the suspect’s vehicle sustained injuries, and she was transported to a local trauma center. Standardized field sobriety tests were conducted on scene and a preliminary alcohol screening device indicated the driver’s blood alcohol content was more than two and a half times the legal limit. The driver was arrested and booked at San Mateo County Jail. Unfortunately, the following day, the passenger succumbed to her injuries.
Driving while impaired is illegal, whether it is alcohol, prescription drugs, over-the counter medications, or marijuana, and there are so many ways to get home safely without driving. Not only is it dangerous and irresponsible, impaired driving causes too many senseless tragedies. If you plan on drinking, smoking marijuana, or are taking medications that can affect your driving ability, designate a sober driver or use a ride-share service. If you see someone driving impaired, call 911.

Charges: Gross Vehicle Manslaughter While Intoxicated (191.5 PC) and Driving Under the Influence causing Great Bodily Injury (23153(A) CVC).
