One Person Dies in Early Morning House Fire
At 1:08 a.m., the Pocatello Fire Department and Pocatello Police Department responded to a house fire at 303 Washington Avenue. When first responders arrived, there was heavy smoke coming from inside the residence and two residents had been able to escape on their own. Pocatello Fire Department immediately started looking for the third individual who was reported to still be inside. When firefighters located the third individual he was deceased.
It took crews approximately 40 minutes to control the fire which extended throughout the main floor of the home. A cat was located in the basement and was removed from the house and turned over to Pocatello Animal Services.
The Pocatello Fire Department and Pocatello Police Department are investigating the cause of the fire and that investigation is ongoing. The Bannock County Coroner is overseeing the autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
The home did not have working smoke detectors. The Pocatello Fire Department reminds residents to ensure they have working smoke alarms in every sleeping area, in hallways outside of bedrooms, and on every level of the home. Additionally, residents are encouraged to test smoke alarms regularly to ensure they are working. If you need assistance with obtaining a smoke alarm, contact the Pocatello Fire Department at 208-234-6201.
Members of the media with additional questions are asked to contact Lieutenant Higbee with the Pocatello Police Department at 208-234-6121.
