Los Altos Police Respond to WWI Grenade Found in Home
Los Altos, Calif. — October 11, 2021 — On Monday, October 11, 2021, at 10:15 AM the Los Altos Police Department received a call from a resident who found a suspected grenade in an elderly relative’s bedroom. Los Altos officers responded to the residence, located in the 1700 block of Christina Drive, and requested additional assistance from the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Bomb Squad.
Four adjacent homes were evacuated, and other nearby residents were asked to shelter-in-place.
Santa Clara Sheriff’s personnel determined the device was a World War I vintage grenade that was potentially live. Out of an abundance of caution, personnel elected to detonate the device in the rear yard of the property. Santa Clara County Fire and Paramedics personnel staged in the area to mitigate any potential fire hazards resulting from the detonation. PG&E responded in advance of the detonation to conduct an underground service assessment. Residents in the surrounding area were notified in advance via Nixle. The detonation was completed without incident.
