Advisory

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Valley Oasis offers resources & support for victims thru the AV. Recognize red flags!

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and we invite our residents to join us in sharing awareness, safety and support for victims and survivors.

Anyone and everyone can be affected by domestic violence. Domestic violence does not discriminate by race, gender, creed, religion, financial status or any other demographic. This is one crime that affects us all.

So what is Domestic violence?
Domestic violence is abuse or aggression that occurs in a romantic relationship. A relationship with an intimate partner can be:
A current or former spouse
A dating relationship including teenagers
Among heterosexual or same-sex couples
It can happen one time or many times

Abuse does not always start off physical. Often times, the aggressor displays characteristic that can be "red flags" such as:
Controlling and domineering behavior
Putting down accomplishments and goals
Embarrassing and making fun of a victim in front of friends and family
Pressure to perform sexual activities
Isolating from friends, family and activities the victim would normally enjoy
Pushing, grabbing, pinching and shoving and ultimately striking/hitting

On average, a victim attempts to leave an abusive relationship 8 times before they are successful. Some victims never live to see that 8th attempt.

We here in the Antelope Valley are fortunate to have wonderful resources for victims in organizations such as Valley Oasis. With counseling, safety planning, CalWorks services and emergency and transitional housing available, Valley Oasis offers victims support from the first moment possible.

Whether we are the victim, have been a victim or know a victim, domestic violence has touched us all. If you or anyone you know is in need of services, please reach out. Help is out there.
