Berkeley PD Using Grant Money to Fight Impaired Driving

In July, the City of Berkeley Police Department was awarded over $183,000 in grant funds from the Cannabis Tax Fund Grant Program (CTFGP).

The funding is the result of Proposition 64, the Control, Regulate and Tax Adult Use of Marijuana Act, which provided specified cannabis tax funding to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) to administer local grants for education, prevention, and enforcement programs regarding impaired driving.  Funding for the grants comes from a tax on the cultivation and sale of cannabis and cannabis products sold in California since January 2018.

BPD will be utilizing the CTFGP to send its officers to courses on Standardized Field Sobriety, Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving, and Drug and Alcohol Recognition. It will also provide additional training to its supervisors on DUI Checkpoint Planning and Management. The grant funding also enables the department to field additional officers to proactively enforce laws related to driving under the influence.

BPD is grateful to the CHP for the opportunities this grant program affords the department and our community.
