Annual Fall RX Drug Take Back Day is this Saturday, October 23rd

It’s time once again to gather your unwanted, unused prescription drugs for safe disposal. National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is coming up on October 23, 2021. Conducted twice a year by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency, RX Take Back Day makes it easy to safely rid your homes of unused drugs.  At the last Take Back Day in April, Americans safely disposed of 839,543 pounds (420 tons) of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescriptions.  Old and unused prescription medications are a public safety issue, leading to accidental poisoning, overdose, and abuse.  Pharmaceutical drugs can be just a dangerous as street drugs when taken without a prescription or under a doctor’s supervision.

Take Back events began more than ten years ago, after the Environmental Protection Agency and the Food and Drug Administration advised the public that the then common methods for disposing of medicines – flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the garbage – posed potential safety and health hazards. Since that first event in the Fall of 2010, a total of 12,524,391 pounds (7,262 tons) of drugs have been collected for safe disposal.

This service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.  We will be following COVID-19 safety protocols of social distancing and face coverings.  You can drop off pills and patches at either of our stations between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm this coming Saturday, October 23rd.  Please note that we are unable to accept liquids, needles, or sharps.  Our Larkspur station is located at 250 Doherty Drive and our San Anselmo station is at 525 San Anselmo Avenue.
