Statewide COVID-19 breakthrough case data
I and many Americans across the country are saddened by today’s passing of General Colin L. Powell, former U.S. Secretary of State and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, due to COVID-19 complications. General Powell was a trailblazer who dedicated his life to public service. I wish his family and all those who knew him my thoughts, prayers, and sympathies.
While General Powell was fully vaccinated in February, he was immunocompromised and suffered from multiple myeloma, a cancer of plasma cells that suppresses the body's immune response. I urge everyone who is not vaccinated to get vaccinated to protect those who are immunocompromised or ineligible to receive a vaccine from COVID-19 and please, if you are eligible, get your booster shot as soon as possible as the effectiveness of the vaccines wanes over time.
According to CDC data, you are 11 times more likely to die of COVID-19 if you are unvaccinated compared to those who are vaccinated, and the State’s own data reflects that breakthrough cases make up only a small fraction of COVID-19 related deaths.
Among the 5,630,794 fully vaccinated individuals across the State, 0.65% or 36,616 have tested positive for COVID-19, 0.01% or 794 have been hospitalized for COVID-19, and 0.004% or 215 have died due to COVID-19 related complications.
Again, I encourage you, if you haven’t done so already get vaccinated and get your booster shot if you are able.
Vaccine and booster shot updates
Last week, the FDA's independent panel of experts voted unanimously to recommend a booster shot for some individuals who received a Moderna vaccine. The panel also voted to recommend authorizing Johnson & Johnson booster shots for people 18 years old or older who received their Johnson & Johnson vaccine at least two months prior.
Now, the City of Hoboken and the rest of the country wait for the recommendations of the CDC's advisory panel, scheduled to meet this week.
As the City did following the approval of Pfizer booster shots, the Hoboken Health Department and our local partners will provide booster shots through pop-up clinics at senior buildings and vaccine clinics at 605 Jackson St, once the booster shots are authorized and guidance regarding who is eligible to receive a booster shot is issued.
Currently, only Pfizer booster shots have been authorized for certain eligible individuals and the Pfizer and Moderna third dose shots are available for immunocompromised individuals. I strongly encourage those who are eligible to get a booster shot or a third dose as public health experts have reported that the vaccine's protection against COVID-19 decreases over time.
Trick-or-treating and upcoming holiday guidance
COVID-19 cases continue to trend down in Hoboken and across the country, and public health officials have indicated that trick-or-treating on Halloween does not need to be cancelled this year.
Health experts recommend trick or treating outside in small groups and to get vaccinated if you are eligible. If you are planning to trick-or-treat this year, please avoid large indoor gatherings or Halloween parties and take precautions as the majority of trick-or-treaters are under 12 years old and thus can't yet get vaccinated against COVID-19.
With many more holidays and family gatherings just around the corner, I urge everyone to follow the CDC's Holiday guidance to ensure that you're gathering with your loved ones as safely as possible.
- Protect those not yet eligible for vaccination by getting yourself vaccinated.
- Wear well-fitting masks over your nose and mouth if you are in public indoor settings if you are not fully vaccinated.
- Even fully vaccinated people should wear a mask in public indoor settings in communities with substantial to high transmission.
- Prioritize outdoor gatherings rather than indoor gatherings.
- Avoid crowded, poorly ventilated spaces.
- If you are sick or have symptoms, don't host or attend a gathering.
- Get tested if you have symptoms of COVID-19 or have had close contact with someone who has COVID-19.
If you are considering traveling for a holiday or event, visit the CDC's Travel page to help you decide what is best for you and your family and please delay traveling until you are fully vaccinated.
