Investigation Leads to Police Pursuit and Discovery of a Residential Burglary

Harrison Police converged on the Lincoln Avenue corridor in Purchase Monday evening after an officer observed a suspicious vehicle linked to a string of burglaries in the area.
The SUV was suspected of involvement in a string of burglaries based on an ongoing Harrison Police investigation. At 8:45 p.m., a patrol officer observed the vehicle leaving a residential cul-de-sac off Lincoln Avenue and followed it onto the Hutchinson River Parkway southbound. When the officer attempted a vehicle stop, the suspicious SUV fled at a high rate of speed.
In the interest of public safety, and absent proof that the vehicle had been involved in a crime, a police supervisor called off the pursuit. The vehicle was last seen exiting at Mamaroneck Avenue.
Subsequent investigation revealed that a home had been burglarized in the area where the suspicious vehicle was first observed. The time of day and method of burglary were consistent with other recent burglaries in Harrison.
As part of the follow up investigation, police checked the area of the Hutchinson River Parkway at Mamaroneck Avenue and discovered that the suspicious vehicle had crashed. The SUV launched itself some 80 feet from the exit ramp into a heavily wooded area. The occupant(s) of the vehicle had fled the area prior to police arrival.
The investigation is continuing. Harrison Police Chief John T. Vasta would like to remind residents to immediately report any suspicious activity and take precautions to safeguard their homes. Residents should ensure that alarms, if present, are working and armed, that doors and windows are locked, garage doors are down and locked and lights are on in the house.
