Crime Prevention Tips to Make a Habit

When it comes to home security, the four most important strategies are awareness, taking preventative measures, educating yourself and your family, and being consistent.

Deter criminals by incorporating these simple crime prevention habits into your nightly routine:

- Bring in your mail, newspaper and packages
- Be sure your garage door, shed and gate(s) are closed and locked
- Remove valuables from your car, close and lock doors and windows, and set the alarm
- Place your bicycle in a garage or shed and lock it to a stationary object
- Close windows and curtains / blinds
- Make sure appliances are turned off
- Place valuable items in a hidden (and, preferably locked) location (e.g. keys, purse/wallet, laptop)
- Turn on outdoor lights or install motion sensor lights
- Set your home alarm
- Make sure security cameras are working properly
- Be sure you have a land line or charged cell phone in your bedroom in case of emergency
- Report suspicious activity by calling Public Safety Dispatchers at (408)615-5580. In an emergency, dial 9-1-1

When it comes to the safety of your family and your neighborhood, a combined team effort is the best way to go.
