Advisory

October is National Crime Prevention Month

October is National Crime Prevention Month and we wanted to share how you can contribute towards the safety of the community. The Janesville Police Department reminds residents that everyone can play a role in preventing crime. The Janesville Police Department would like to remind the community about some safety reminders as we move into the cold weather and holiday seasons. The goal is to deter property-related crimes from occurring. Below are some safety reminders to keep you from being victimized:
  • Always lock your vehicle and remove all valuable items including guns. Majority of thefts reported are from unlocked vehicles. Thieves can use garage-door openers found in unlocked vehicles to access garages and homes.
  • Never leave your car running unattended (including at gas stations) and always take your keys with you. Help prevent your vehicle from being stolen.
  • Park in well-lit areas
  • Lock residential doors at all times. Maintain and turn on exterior lighting at night. Neighborhoods which are bright, and well-lit are less prone to crime.
  • Never leave your purse or wallet unattended in the shopping cart while shopping. This creates a temptation for thieves. Keep a secure hold on your personal belongings at all times.
  • Be aware of strangers approaching you for any reason. Thieves may try various methods of distracting you with the intention of taking your money or belongings.
  • Try to have a family member, friend or neighbor retrieve packages that are delivered to your home if you are unavailable.
  • When leaving home for an extended time, have a neighbor, or family member watch your house and check your mail.
  • Never give out any personal identifying or financial information over the phone, computer or in person. Always verify who you are speaking with.
  • Anyone who tells you to pay with a gift card is a scammer. No real business or government agency will ever insist you pay them with a gift card over the phone. Scammers may tell you many stories to get you to pay them with gift cards.
  • Report any suspicious behavior, vehicles or activities you may observe.
October has become the official month for recognizing and raising awareness for crime prevention in an effort to create a safer community. We can never be too careful, too prepared or too aware. Please share this information with family, friends, and neighbors.
