INCIDENT: Fatal Traffic Collision
LOCATION: Hesperia Road north of Eucalyptus Street
DRIVER #1: Joe Martinez, 62-year-old male, resident of Colton, CA
VEHICLE #1: 2010 Toyota FJ Cruiser
DRIVER #2: EunHee Sims, 62-year-old female, resident of McArthur, CA
VEHICLE #2: 2008 Honda CRV
SUMMARY: On Tuesday, October 26, 2021, at approximately 7:06 p.m., Deputies from the Hesperia Station and rescue personnel from the San Bernardino County Fire Department responded to a traffic collision on Hesperia Road, north of Eucalyptus Street, in the city of Hesperia. Upon arrival, deputies determined Joe Martinez, driving a 2010 Toyota FJ Cruiser, traveled north on Hesperia Road and EunHee Sims, driving a 2008 Honda CRV, traveled south on Hesperia Road. For unknown reasons, Martinez (Toyota) veered into the southbound lane of Hesperia Road and collided head on with the Honda. Ms. Sims was pronounced deceased on scene by emergency personnel. Martinez was transported to a trauma center for treatment. At this time, investigators are trying to determine if drugs and/or alcohol were a factor in the collision.
Hesperia Road from Sycamore Street to Eucalyptus Street was closed for several hours while deputies from the Hesperia Major Accident Investigation Team processed the scene.
During the investigation, investigators learned Martinez was wanted for a felony criminal threats investigation against family members, earlier in the day, but fled the residence before deputies arrived. The criminal threats investigation is ongoing.
