A Safe Halloween is a Happy Halloween
Fall celebrations, like Halloween, are fun times for children, who can dress up in costumes, enjoy parties, and eat yummy treats.
Take a few safety precautions – a safe Halloween is a Happy Halloween!
Before Halloween...
• Choose bright costumes, add reflective tape and wear a glow stick for visibility
• Make sure children know your cell phone number, their home telephone number and address in case you get separated.
• Make sure your costume doesn’t drag on the ground and the mask does not obstruct your vision.
On Halloween...
• Make sure older children take friends, stay together while trick-or-treating and have an established curfew.
• Never send younger children out alone – they should be with a parent, guardian, or another trusted adult.
• Only cross at street corners and use traffic signals and crosswalks.
• Always walk younger children to the door to receive treats.
• Don’t let children enter a home and never invite strangers into your home.
• Carry a cell phone for quick communication, but do not use it while walking.
• When leaving the house make sure you lock your doors and set your security alarm system.
• Drivers should enter and exit driveways carefully and drive slowly in residential neighborhoods.
• Do not eat anything (e.g. candy, baked goods, etc.) unless it is sealed in a manufacturer’s package.
• If you are contacted by a police officer and your costume includes a fake weapon (e.g. sword, knife, gun, machete), follow their instructions.
Families may also choose to participate in a SPOOKTACULAR outdoor event at the Youth Activity Center (2450 Cabrillo Avenue) on October 30 from 1 - 4 p.m. Admission is FREE! The party includes carnival games, music, trick-or-treating, a pumpkin walk and more! The Santa Clara Police Department will be represented at the event - come say "boo!"
