SCPD Partners with Santa Clara University's Safe Walk Program

During the course of an average day, there can be as many as 10,000 people traveling on or near Santa Clara University - in cars, motorcycles, mopeds, bicycles, skateboards, scooters or on foot.

Santa Clara University offers a Safe Walk program to students and employees on campus who want to be safely escorted on campus or within 10-block distance off-campus. This free service is available on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, from 10pm to 1am.

Last week, members of the Santa Clara Police Department conducted a drinking and drug awareness program among the participants in the Safe Walk program. Students were trained on signs of impairment related to alcohol, cannabis and other illicit drugs, as well as how to respond when interacting with impaired subjects. This 4-hour session included verbal discussion, as well as physical training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu revolves around the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend him/herself against a bigger, stronger, heavier opponent by using leverage and weight distribution, taking the fight to the ground and using a number of holds and submissions to defeat them in self-defense situations.

To volunteer for the Safe Walk Program, call 480-550-0752 (Arizona area code). Meanwhile, students interested in a safe escort should call 408-554-4410.
