Press Release: Mountain Lion Incident
On November 2, 2021 at 7:51pm, the La Verne Police Department was made aware of an incident involving a mountain lion who bit a dog in the 4700 block of Valle Verde Court on October 28, 2021 at 7:17pm.
The Inland Valley Humane Society was contacted by the La Verne Police Department. The La Verne Police Department along with our partners at Inland Valley Humane Society are investigating the incident and continue to remind residents to remain alert while in areas where wildlife reside.
California Fish and Wildlife was also contacted by the La Verne Police Department and the incident was reported. California Department of Fish and Game would like to remind residents of the following;
It is not typical for California Department of Fish and Wildlife to receive reports of mountain lions attacking dogs. It does occur occasionally when dogs are left outdoors/unprotected at night. If a dog is aggressive toward a mountain lion, it is normal and expected behavior for the mountain lion to defend itself.
Residents can prevent similar incidents from occurring by being aware that mountain lions utilize this area and to always take precautions such as bringing pets, pet food/water indoors, particularly at night when mountain lions actively hunt.
Deer are mountain lions’ primary prey item, so if residents commonly observe deer in their neighborhood, we recommend deterring deer from properties as well.
