San Leandro Police Make Arrests on Catalytic Convertor Theft

On November 7th, about 4:40 am, the San Leandro Police Department responded to investigate a catalytic convertor theft on the 600 block of McCormick Street.  As officers arrived on the scene, they could hear the sound of metal being cut by a tool, indicating the crime was still occurring.

Officers established a police perimeter around the lot, which housed several utility trucks.  Two people were observed in the parking lot.  Seconds later, both suspects fled on foot in different directions in the area where the officers had been placed on the perimeter of the lot.  The two suspects, a 31-year-old male and a 39-year-old male from Oakland, were arrested.

Officers located 18 catalytic convertors cut from the utility trucks and burglary tools used to commit the theft.

SLPD would like to remind our community to take measures to make their vehicles less vulnerable to theft.

· Park within well-lit areas
· Park inside a garage if possible
· Park close to building entrances or near busy roadways
· Add video surveillance to the area where your vehicle is regularly parked, and add motion alerts to your smartphone
· Install aftermarket catalytic converter security devices

“The SLPD Patrol Division spent several hours piecing this investigation together.  We are proud and thankful for their dedication to the City of San Leandro,” said Lieutenant Barajas
