New Preliminary Alcohol Screening Devices Purchased
The Santa Clara Police Department recently acquired ten new Preliminary Alcohol Screening (PAS) devices with the use of Cannabis Tax Fund Grant and Asset Forfeiture funds. The devices are used by officers during traffic stops and at collision scenes when driving under the influence of alcohol is suspected.
In these cases, suspected drunk drivers may be asked to perform a Field Sobriety Tests (e.g. nystagmus, walk and turn, finger to nose, standing on one leg, etc.) in order to find signs of impairment and establish probable cause.
An officer may also request that a suspect take a PAS test. A PAS is a handheld instrument, similar to a breathalyzer, used at the scene to provide a quick estimate of blood alcohol content. Like field sobriety tests, a PAS is used to supplement FST's to determine if the driver has consumed alcohol.
Play it safe Santa Clara!
- If you plan to drink, plan for a sober ride home (e.g. designated driver, ride share, public transportation, stay overnight at your location, etc.)
- If you are buzzed, do not drive. Even one alcoholic beverage can impair your judgement and driving
- If you see someone who is drinking, take their keys. Then make arrangements to get them home safely. Don’t worry about offending them, they will thank you later
- If you see a drunk driver on the road call 9-1-1
