The Janesville Police Department is investigating a suspicious activity that occurred at the Marshall Middle School Rec Night. Officers initially received a second-hand report of two students being in a bathroom stall at the same time. Today, officers were able to identify the reporting student and speak with them regarding what they saw and heard. Once that statement was taken officers reached out to school administration to review video footage.

The Dean of Students from Marshall Middle School reviewed security footage from the hallway outside of the restroom. The video footage does not support that a crime was committed at this point. Officers from the Janesville Police Department are continuing to investigate the incident and identify those that may have been either a witness or involved, so a statement can be obtained.  

The goal of this investigation is to confirm all information and determine what happened. Ensuring the safety of the students attending Rec Night is a priority for the Janesville Police Department and the City of Janesville staff.  This is why these events are staffed by a Janesville Police Officer along with several chaperones.

This is an isolated incident and there is no reason for public concern at this time. We do not have confirmation that a crime has been comitted at this time. We will continue to investigate this report and work closely with the school district until all the facts are known. Once those facts are known and verified, if there is a criminal case to be made we will make that case.
