Borough of Leonia - Charter Study Committee - Applications Now Open
The Mayor and Council of the Borough of Leonia have authorized a review of Leonia's current form of government, in order to determine if it most effectively serves all of the residents of Leonia, and that it allows for the widest possible participation by Leonians in local government. To accomplish this, they have decided to form a Charter Study Committee (“Committee”).
The Committee will be comprised of seven members, selected by a committee consisting of the Mayor, the Council President, and another member of the Borough Council selected by its members. Those selections will then be voted on by the full Governing Body. Any Leonia resident who is also a registered voter is eligible to serve on the committee, except that those serving in the roles shown below are not eligible for consideration as members:
- The Mayor;
- Any member of the Leonia Borough Council;
- Any member of the Leonia Board of Education; and/or;
- Any member of a municipal, county or state Democratic or Republican Committee
Once appointed, the Committee will review all forms of government in New Jersey, seek input from other municipalities and government experts, ensure that the public has significant input through through public hearings, and finally, arrive at a recommendation, made to the Leonia Mayor and Council, either to keep Leonia’s current form of government, or change it to a different form. If any change to Leonia’s form of government is to be formally considered, the final decision on whether or not to implement such a change MUST be approved by Leonia voters.
More information regarding the creation of the Committee, and its responsibilities, can be found on the Leonia Borough website by clicking here.
The Leonia Mayor and Council are currently seeking applications from registered voters who are Leonia residents, and who are interested in serving as a member of the Leonia Charter Study Committee. If you are interested, you are asked to complete a short online application; the Mayor and Council will then review the applications, and appoint the members of the Committee early in 2022.
In order to complete the application, please click here.
The application will only be open until 11:59 PM EST on December 20, 2021.
The Council members and I hope that all Leonia registered voters will consider submitting an application to express interest in being considered for appointment as a member of the Leonia Charter Study Committee.
