Statewide Burn Ban Effective 5PM Today Until Further Notice
As of 5PM Monday November 29 there is a burn ban in effect. Absolutely no outdoor burning until further notice, likely until significant precipitation. No burning permits will be issued and existing permits are Void. This is due to extremely dry conditions, low relative humidity during the daytime along with varying wind conditions. Also residents should use extreme caution disposing of fireplace/wood stove ashes. Ashes can insulate hot embers for days. Either store ashes in a metal container with a lid sealing it or you can dig a small hole, thoroughly soak ash with water and cover with soil. Anyone noticing a fire should contact 911 to report it.
Under North Carolina law, the ban prohibits all open burning in the affected counties, regardless of whether a permit was previously issued. The issuance of any new permits has also been suspended until the ban is lifted. Anyone violating the burn ban faces a $100 fine plus $183 court costs. Any person responsible for setting a fire may be liable for any expenses related to extinguishing the fire.
