Advisory

Update from Mayor Bhalla on COVID-19 (11/30)

Below is an update on COVID-19 from Mayor Ravi S. Bhalla:

The Hoboken Health Department reports the following new COVID-19 cases:

 November 20: 19
 November 21: 6
 November 22: 3
 November 23: 13
 November 24: 8
 November 25: 15
 November 26: 19

Since the pandemic's onset, the City of Hoboken has had 6,172 known, confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 56 fatalities. Currently, no one is hospitalized and being treated for COVID-19 at Hoboken University Medical Center.

Unfortunately, we are beginning to see an increase in positive COVID-19 cases as socializing returns indoors due to the colder weather. I encourage everyone eligible to please roll up their sleeves and get vaccinated, including our youth. The vaccine remains our best line of defense against the virus, and if you do have a breakthrough case, it will mitigate the chances of you suffering severe symptoms and needing hospitalization. If you are eligible to get the booster, please do so as leading health experts have said it will increase your protection against COVID-19. As we seek to gather with friends and loved ones for the holidays, now is the time to get your booster.

I continue to urge you to follow guidelines from the CDC:

  • Wash your hands, socially distance.
  • Avoid gathering indoors in poorly ventilated areas.
  • Wear a mask when indoors when the vaccination status of those you're with is unknown
  • If you feel sick, please avoid socializing and get tested

Hoboken Health Department contact tracing update

  • Travel both domestic and abroad
  • Transmission within household contacts
  • More adults testing positive due to large social gatherings
  • More pediatric cases are testing positive for COVID-19 resulting in the closure of some daycare classrooms

Statewide breakthrough cases update

Governor Murphy released new data regarding statewide breakthrough COVID-19 cases. Among the 5,876,552 fully vaccinated individuals across the State, 0.92% or 54,260 people have tested positive for COVID-19, 0.02% or 1,160 have been hospitalized for COVID-19, and 0.005% or 314 have died due to COVID-19 related complications.

New variant identified

The World Health Organization recently designated a new variant, Omicron, as a "variant of concern," but little is known about this variant first identified in South Africa.

We don't yet know if it is more transmissible or more severe than the variants we have seen so far, but the WHO and CDC are conducting studies to learn more.

As we have done since the pandemic began, we will continue to monitor the situation and work closely with state health officials.

No matter the variant, it is important to curtail the spread of COVID-19 and the best way to do that is to get vaccinated and if you are eligible to get your booster shot.

Schedule your clinic appointment

I am pleased to share that since the CDC and FDA expanded the eligibility requirements of those who could receive a booster dose of the vaccine and authorized the pediatric Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine, the City and its local partners have administered over 1,000 booster shots and over 800 pediatric vaccines at City clinics.

The City's Health Department continues to partner with local providers to offer vaccine and testing clinics throughout the week for anyone who lives, works, or goes to school in Hoboken.

Through these partnerships, the City provides access to third doses of Moderna and Pfizer vaccines for immunocompromised individuals, booster shots for anyone eligible over the age of 18, and pediatric Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines for children between the ages of 5 and 11 years old.

This week, we have expanded clinic offerings with testing, booster, and pediatric vaccine clinics available on Jackson Street all week long and two booster and pediatric vaccine clinics on Saturday morning, one uptown at 1460 Garden St. and one downtown at 123 Jefferson St.

Appointments are required at City clinics, and they can be booked online at www.hobokennj.gov/vaccine or at www.hobokennj.gov/testing.

If you are getting a booster shot, don't forget to bring your vaccine card.
