Since the pandemic's onset, the City of Hoboken has had 6,280 known, confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 56 fatalities. Unfortunately, for the first time in over a month, I must inform you that Hoboken University Medical Center is currently treating six people hospitalized with COVID-19. Of these six individuals, five are Hoboken residents, and of these residents, four were not vaccinated.
As you can see, we have had an uptick in COVID-19 cases. Please continue to take precautions and follow guidance from the CDC such as:
- Wash your hands
- Socially distance
- Avoid gathering indoors in poorly ventilated areas
- Wear a mask when indoors, especially when the vaccination statuses of those you're with is unknown
- If you feel sick, please avoid socializing and get tested
I continue to strongly encourage all those eligible to get vaccinated and get their booster shot, as this remains our best line of defense against the continued spread of COVID-19 within our community and region.

New federal travel restrictions go into effect Monday
President Biden recently announced new travel regulations, which go into effect on Monday, that require any traveler flying into the United States from another country to test negative for COVID-19 one day before their departure. This is a change from previous rules that allowed travelers to test negative up to three days before entering the United States. If traveling abroad, please take note of this new regulation, and consider researching testing options before reaching your destination. As of today, there has not yet been a vaccine requirement announced for domestic airline travel.
Update on Omicron
As reported in various publications, the Omicron variant has been detected in nearly two dozen countries and at least 20 cases in 13 states, including New York and New Jersey.
On Friday, Governor Phil Murphy and New Jersey Department of Health Commissioner Judy Persichilli announced that the New Jersey Department of Health has identified a case of the Omicron variant in a traveler to the state. The fully vaccinated Georgia resident had recently traveled to South Africa. Since testing positive on Nov. 28, she has remained in isolation and experienced moderate symptoms. She is now recovering.
Another positive Omicron case was an individual who traveled from Minnesota to New York City to an anime convention at the Javits Center in Manhattan. Anyone who attended that convention is urged to get tested.
Scientists continue to study the variant, the level of transmission, and how effective vaccines are against it.
The best way to provide the greatest level of protection from any variant of COVID-19 remains to get vaccinated, or boosted, if you haven’t already done so.
Vaccine and testing appointments are available
The Hoboken Health Department continues to partner with local providers to offer vaccine and testing clinics throughout the week for anyone who lives, works, or goes to school in Hoboken.
Through these partnerships, the City provides access to vaccines, third doses of Moderna and Pfizer vaccines for immunocompromised individuals, booster shots for anyone eligible over the age of 18, and pediatric Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines for children between the ages of 5 and 11 years old.
Last week alone, 2,361 people got vaccinated, 1,484 individuals received their booster shot, and 877 children between the ages of 5 and 11 got the pediatric vaccine at City clinics.
